An independent research institute
How do institutionspreserve trust, judgementand evidencein an increasinglycomplex world?
Pause & Ask is an independent research institute studying institutional judgement, evidence integrity and responsible decision-making. We produce research, develop frameworks and educate the professionals and institutions on whom public trust depends.
Reflection before reaction.
An independent British research institute for institutional judgement and evidence integrity.
Pause & Ask exists to improve the quality of institutional decision-making by researching the conditions that shape it — the environments, the cultures, the evidence and the systems on which consequential judgements depend.
We are an educational charity and independent research institute. We accept no commercial agenda. We produce freely available research, develop practical frameworks and educate the professionals and organisations responsible for decisions that affect public trust.
Our work sits at the intersection of behavioural research, institutional governance and emerging technology. We study how institutions make decisions, how they evaluate evidence, how their environments shape the people within them, and how they can be intentionally designed to sustain trust in an increasingly complex world.
Artificial intelligence is the most urgent current challenge to institutional evidence and judgement — but it is not the only one. Our research programme is designed to remain relevant as technologies, societies and the demands on institutions continue to evolve.
“The conditions we create, create us.”
Four interconnected programmes studying how institutions think, decide and maintain trust.
Institutional Judgement & Decision-Making
How do institutions make consequential decisions under pressure? We study the environmental, cultural and structural conditions that shape organisational judgement — and the practices that protect it.
Evidence Integrity
How do institutions create, evaluate, preserve and rely upon trustworthy evidence? As artificial intelligence, synthetic media and automated systems reshape the information landscape, the integrity of evidence becomes a foundational question for every institution.
Wellbeing & Organisational Environments
How do the environments institutions create affect the mental wellbeing, belonging and identity of the people within them? We research the conditions that produce healthier behaviour and stronger relationships in institutional settings.
Education & Public Understanding
How do we translate research into practical learning that reaches professionals, students, educators and the public? We develop educational resources, frameworks and programmes grounded in the institute's research.
Evidence Integrity
Evidence Integrity is the study of how institutions create, evaluate, preserve and rely upon trustworthy evidence when making important decisions.
As generative artificial intelligence, synthetic media and automated decision-making reshape the information landscape, the question of what constitutes reliable evidence — and how institutions can distinguish it — becomes foundational.
This is not solely a technology question. It is a question about institutional design, professional judgement, governance and public trust. Artificial intelligence is the first major application of this research programme. It will not be the last.
The Evidence Integrity Index — a framework for assessing institutional readiness to maintain evidence integrity — is currently in development.
“The question for every institution is not whether its evidence is perfect — but whether its processes for evaluating evidence are trustworthy.”Pause & Ask — Evidence Integrity Programme
“Technology changes. Human needs endure. Institutions must be designed for both — built on constants, responsive to what evolves.”Pause & Ask — Institutional Judgement Framework

Research, education, frameworks and public dialogue.
The institute's work spans independent research, educational programmes, professional guidance and public policy contribution. Some activities are established; others are in development as the institute grows.
Every institution that depends on trustworthy evidence and sound judgement.
Our research, frameworks and educational programmes are designed for the institutions on whom public trust depends — and the professionals within them who make consequential decisions.
Independent research — freely available,
always in the public interest.
Evidence in the Age of Generation: A Framework for Institutional Trust
How should institutions evaluate evidence when the tools that produce it can also fabricate it? A founding framework for evidence integrity in the era of generative AI.
How Environments Shape the Decisions Institutions Make
An evidence-informed review of the relationship between environmental conditions and institutional decision-making — covering workplaces, courts, healthcare and public bodies.
Recognition, Belonging and the Conditions for Institutional Wellbeing
How recognition, belonging and identity shape both individual wellbeing and institutional judgement — and how organisations can build environments that sustain both.
Leadership, Culture and the Environments Institutions Create
How organisational culture develops, how leadership shapes decision environments, and what the evidence suggests about designing institutions that maintain their integrity.
If your institution is navigating questions of evidence, judgement or trust —
we would welcome the conversation.
We work with institutions, universities, government and professional bodies. All enquiries treated in strict confidence.
